Family Literacy

In 2002, The Christian Appalachian Project partnered with the Rockcastle county school system and the Rockcastle county Family Court to create a court-ordered Family Literacy program in Rockcastle county. The program targets the families of adolescents and teens who have been referred to Family Court for school-related issues. The program combines a parent/teen discussion group, parenting, child educational activities and adult educational activities, and utilizes the expertise of staff from other CAP programs (Family Life Counseling and Family Life Child Development Center.) The broad goal is to strengthen the academic skills of all family members, while helping them deal with the problems at home and at school.  The core goal is help young people get back on track and prevent them from dropping out of school.

In 2004 the program was expanded to include court-ordered families of younger children, many of whom are in out-of-home placement. The goal for these families is to strengthen the academic and parenting skills of the adults and help preserve the family unit.
